Ski and snowboard holidays in Ischgl

Ischgl is the dominant ski holiday resort in the Paznaun Valley. Ischgl competes with St Anton as the best ski area but in truth, apart from the advantage St Anton has in expert and extreme terrain, there is not too much between them.

There are similarities between the resorts as well in that in Ischgl, the skier or rider can cross the border and ski into the Swiss ski holiday resort of Samnaun, just as those in St Anton can descend into St Christoph. Whereas St Anton is known worldwide, Ischgl is a better kept secret and still fairly unexplored by visitors beyond Austria, Germany and Holland. This is of course changing in Ischgl and over the last few years more and more people have been arriving in Ischgl.

This is of course changing in Ischgl and over the last few years more and more people have been arriving in Ischgl. The town of Ischgl has expanded and substantial resources have been invested in new lift infrastructure, as Ischgl keeps pace with lift improvements and the increasing number of visitors. On the slopes Ischgl offers an extensive and centrally located beginners area at Idalp, the destination for two of the three gondolas that leave Ischgl. Here there are lockers, restaurants and the nursery area, as well as it being the main hub of the ski area in Ischgl. This is also the location for the main terrain park and half pipe. Beyond the Idalp, the ski area in Ischgl is extensive with mainly intermediate pistes and some more advanced pistes. Expert terrain is less abundant but it is the off-piste skiing for which Ischgl is famed and which keeps able skiers in Ischgl entertained.
